Steve Apfelbaum

CHIEF RESTORATION ECOLOGIST

Steve Apfelbaum is Pantheon's Chief Restoration Ecologist and retired Chairperson of Applied Ecological Services — one of the largest ecosystem science and restoration firms in the Americas — where he contributed to 20,000+ projects across North America over four decades. A prolific author and thought leader, his expertise spans river restoration, wetland science, fire ecology, and water quality across hundreds of US and Canadian watersheds. He has published hundreds of peer-reviewed papers and books, including Nature's Second Chance, named one of the Top 10 Environmental Books of 2009 by the New York Times. He served as a Visiting Lecturer at Harvard's Graduate School of Design for 12 years and is a Certified Senior Ecologist and Honorary Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. Steve holds an MS in Ecological and Biological Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
